A hemodialysis patient is exposed to hundreds of litres of water every week, so the quality of that water matters as much as the dialysis machine itself. Reverse osmosis (RO) is the core of almost every dialysis water system.
What RO removes
In RO, feed water is pushed under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane. Dissolved salts, metals, bacteria and endotoxins are largely rejected, and purified water passes through. A well-maintained membrane rejects more than 99% of dissolved solids.
Why pre-treatment matters
Membranes are protected by pre-treatment: sediment filters remove particles, a softener removes hardness that would scale the membrane, and carbon filters remove chlorine and chloramine that would damage it. Skipping or neglecting pre-treatment shortens membrane life and lets contaminants through.
Double pass
ThriveRO systems use two RO stages in series. The second pass polishes the water from the first, giving extra margin for centres with poor feed water or strict quality targets.
